Botanical Styling For Home, Tabletop and Fashion

While I love classics when styling ~ neutrals, black and white ~ I also love to mix in a bit of trend.   As part of the research, development and implementation of photo styling for clients, I do a deep dive into their creative direction.  Right now, the deep dive is in Botanicals ~ in home, interior design, tabletop, and fashion.  We call this weekly feature on Blog "The Creative Brief" because as a photo stylist you research and immerse yourself in the trend in totality. (And you actually get a "Creative Brief" before assignments.)  So, we let our research take us everywhere.  Which I always suggest for you ~ if you love and want to style with a trend/style ~ look everywhere for inspiration!

When a trend or style hits ~ you see it across lifestyle market completely.  I’m lovin’ that the trend is centering on more bold, dramatic foliage (and ferns) with a more maximalist approach.  As we are styling our outdoor space now, I’m adding trio of styled ferns. Did this for the first time last year and LOVED them.  Loved the low maintenance, beautiful vibrant green color and how BIG they grew.  I’m even thinking about bringin’ the botanical vibe to the wardrobe this spring with this Johanna Ortiz Invictus dress.

BOTANICAL SPECIFICS 

Whatever your style ~ traditional, modern and everything in between ~ you can embrace and style with nature.

PALETTE.  Earthy, chocolate brown, olive green, rust.  Palette is bold, dark, and intense. 

FEEL.  Botanical trend goes deeper than visual aesthetics. It's more of a shift toward us connecting with nature, known now as “naturemaxxing” and being more mindful of our mental well-being.  While I love a polished look, it’s great to have this wild overgrown garden vibe that the new botanical is embracing.  It’s now expressed as “jungle-like’ and “over-sized”.  It’s bold and expressive.

Described as lush, vibrant, flourishing, fresh, airy, serene, organic, earthy and calming.

DEEPER MEANING.  We are craving nature to give us more calm and grounding feeling. We have digital fatigue.  It’s believed that this trend will bring warmth and comfort and make us more attuned to and appreciate our sensories.  Well, that sounds good ~ gotta love that!  It’s about wellness and slow living.  It exudes peace.

HOME & INTERIOR DESIGN

Williams Sonoma Home is bringin' the botanical style in a big way and bringing in the tranquil beauty of the garden indoors!  Check out their trend interpretation and inspiration on how to bring this to life in your home.  We always see blue ginger jars.   Green is a great, vibrant change.

What We Are Seeing In Home:

Pattern Drench. Duplicating botanical pattern by using the same print on wallpaper, drapery and furniture.  An all-inclusive approach.  If it was fashion ~ it would be called "head to toe".  That's the look ~ but with your home.

Organic Luxe.  Mixing natural materials, like wood and stone surfaces and textures. Nature-inspired design remains consistent as we continue to prioritize wellness, comfort, and deeper connection nature.  Architectural choices will support calm and well-being as well. Trend will inspire us to have living walls, botanical motifs, and nature-inspired palettes. These touches help create environments that feel restorative and emotionally peaceful.

Dramatic. Bold statement styling with big, botanical murals. Pillows with large patterns.

You do not have to style with botanical prints, wallpaper, accessories in your home to achieve a botanical style, it can be achieved by just using the deep, rich, nature colored palette and incorporating plants.

BOTANICAL TABLETOP

Botanical tabletops remind of pieces I get at the Brimfield Antique Market. They embrace a nostalgic time.  These pieces from William Sonoma are a complete immersion into a floral look ~ I love it!  These would be great in minimalistic look by layering in neutral pieces as well.  Which brings up the question:

Botanical Design vs. Floral Design ~ What's the Difference?

Botanical patterns and designs can include flowers, but the key distinction lies more with foliage, greenery, darker, moodier palettes that leans toward gothic-victorian influence, while floral design is often romantic and delicate.

Again, to style with the trend, it does not have to be green.  These William Sonoma plates in a thin line art style in neutral tan is beautiful. Everything layered together makes a fresh and vibrant table. Butterflies oftentimes are seen on botanical prints.

BRING IN REAL NATURE

BOTANICAL FASHION

 

We are seeing Fashion Designers continuing to be inspired by nature. Although, I will say ~ there is a line between tropical and botanical. Some favorites who embrace a nature-driven direction.

What We Are Seeing In Fashion:

Retro Florals and Botanical Prints.  Fashion designers are using damask-like, retro, and 1950s-style floral prints on modern silhouettes.

Bold and Moody.  Aesthetic is darker, richer than previous small botanical pastels. New interpretation is expressed as tropical revival, botanical haze and watercolor floral patterns.

Often embracing nature.  Zimmermann Wild Botanica Collection
