Be The One In The Yellow Sweater

Oct 07, 2026

Years ago I read Kate White's The Gutsy Girl Handbook, Manifesto for Success.  Kate White was Editor-In-Chief of five major magazines, including Cosmopolitan for 14 years.  I vividly remember a story she told in her book about when she was in Glamour Magazines' Top 10 College Women contest.  She said that the Magazine asked applicants to write about their goals ~ she instead wrote about why she had no goals, specifically to stand out.  (She did have goals, she just titled in a catchy way.) When she arrived at the photo shoot, wardrobe pieces where they for all the applicants ~ a sea of pastel colors ~ that they could all choose from.  BUT, she noticed a bright yellow sweater. She choose that bright sweater. That sweater decision and goal essay did get her noticed.  It landed her on the August 1972 Glamour Cover.

It's a lesson in breaking rules, go-big-go-home mentality, standing out and letting your personality shine. I vividly remember and related to this story when reading it  because it made me recall my own "yellow sweater" moment.  It was my first job out of college.  Everyone was wearing black, brown and pin stripes.  I wore a yellow suit to work.  Etched in my mind:  It was yellow, pencil skirt with puff sleeve, peplum blazer with gold buttons. (Dating myself, I know.)  I, like Kate had opportunities afforded to me that maybe a fresh out of college employee maybe would not have gotten if she wasn't so bold, confident and secure to wear a bright yellow suit. (Funny, that yellow seems to be THE color?)

Alot of what we talk about here is developing your style, embracing whimsy, being bold, breaking rules, not styling to the trends or how you are "supposed" to style ~ whether that is fashion, food or home ~ your lifestyle.

Be the one in the Yellow Sweater.

This Cover image is the embodiment of the feeling of wearing the yellow sweater. Happy, joyful, content, bold, energetic.  This image is via Free People of a Loopy Mango Sweater. I first saw (& tried on) a Lobby Mango at a Lifestyle Tradeshow in New York, NYNOW.  From that momemt, I was in LOVE with a chunky knit.
