How To Style Your Home With Whimsical Touches
Apr 15, 2026
Our mission and mantra here is "luxe styling with a wink of whimsy." Whimsy adds so much joy and fun AND it adds your personality, character and loves. From furniture, tabletop, artwork to accents ~ it's less about perfection and more about expression. We want to live in spaces that reflect us and what we love and objects, trinkets, and memories we have collected along the way. They tell a story. Your story. The beauty of Incorporating whimsy is that it does not have to be a full re-design. It's doable changes in a small amount of time, investment and curating.
To start the process of adding whimsy to your home ~ think about this:
Is there something in your drawers (or storage) right now, that makes you smile? Take it out of the drawer and style it in your home. (Enjoy it!) If it's a photo, enlarge it and frame it. If you want to go really big, make a statement wall. Take that image, enlarge it into a wall mural. If it's not a photo and it's not flat ~ shadow box it! Or if it's big and 3-dimensional ~ hang it on the wall. You have many options. This is somewhat like the theory of "use the good china everyday". We need to see and enjoy what we love everyday.
When we think home ~ we think function, we think organization, we think comfort, we think security. BUT do we think joy? Let's get to the whimsy and joy. You can be whimsical while retaining your luxe elevated style. You can add touches and accents with balanced restraint. Here are some ways to add whimsy, while still keeping the style of your home.
LET GO OF STYLE RULES
Adding whimsy requires us to let go of our interior style and interior decor rules. You can mix and match and add playful. Remember, your home is your world. It's your sanctuary ~ it makes you feel energized, happy, joyful ~ it can also reflect your memories with pieces of whimsy.
MAKE BOLD STATEMENT
Statement Wall. It can be wallpaper, wall mural, paint ~ (or it can be a large quote that speaks to you) just make a statement.
CONVERSATION PIECE
Add an art piece, furniture piece, build-in shelf. We live in a world of mass produced pieces. One of a kind is very refreshing to style with.
ACCENT DETAILS
These are a few ways to add accents, without going full out whimsy and keeping your style.
1. Wallpaper or paint your stairs in a vibrant color
2. Add color that stands out, not in your home now
3. Unique and playful lighting or lamps
4. Hardware pulls
5. Mirrors with unique frames
ROOM or AREA OF WHIMSY
Want to just "dip your toe" in whimsy, you can start with a small area. You can do just one room or area in your home. It can be the bath with a colorful paint or patterned wall paper. It can be painted or patterned flooring in the bath. OR it can be the pantry room, laundry room. Test out your whimsy.
DISPLAY COLLECTIONS
Have a collection of something that is in storage, organized and put away? Display it and make it whimsical. Our collections and loves are meant to be seen, shared and loved. Collections bring us joy and reflect on your memories on when you got each one of them. For example, if you travel a lot and you collect an item from your travels, make a whimsy display of them. If you love floral shows, and press your florals from the trips, frame and display them!
INSPIRATIONAL BRAND
One of (dare I saw, only ;) ) brand I look for inspiration and products to perfectly marry the luxe with the whimsy is Restoration Hardware. I specifically look to their Baby and Teen Collections and catalogs for luxury whimsy. Yes! I know ~ kid rooms! Inspiration is everywhere.
Example of looking to Restoration Hardware Baby and Teen is this statement wall. It's a whimsy wall with the clouds (& not white clouds ~ out of ordinary color of clouds.) and then to "up the whimsy" they have added 3 dimensional birds. Great example of adding some whimsical style. If you don't have children (or your children are grown) it may seem odd to look to a brand that has children products, but if you love birds (or anything!) why not look to a brand that may be seen "out of ordinary" for what you are looking for. Inspiration is everywhere. For inspiration and accents to add, I look to Restoration for:
▪︎ Mirrors
▪︎ Lighting
▪︎ Accent Pieces
▪︎ 3 Dimensional Art
So, get creative and look to brands that you may not think of for your pieces and inspiration. As an Interior Photo Stylist, we always look to brands that may not appear to be "exactly" the right brand to use for projects. While I said earlier, look to brands and items that are not mass produced ~ but you can do hybrid as well when bringing whimsical touches into your home. It's about balance.
